You’ve probably seen boxed hemp milk on your grocer’s shelves. But, did you know that you can make this delicious milk at home for a fraction of the cost of the shelf-stable hemp milks available in the store? It’s true! And not only that, it tastes better!
So let’s get started today!
First, you are going to need some raw, shelled hemp seed. Your local health food store or online shop will most certainly have this in stock. Make sure you only buy hemp seed that is refrigerated; and keep it refrigerated after purchase. Fresh shelled hemp seed has a nutty green flavor almost like pistachios. Hemp seed that tastes bitter or sour has gone rancid and should be thrown away.
Next, you need clean and very cold water. You’ll want to add 1/2 cup of hemp seed to a pint of chilled water. We like spring water, but any water you’ve chilled will work great! This recipe makes a basic hemp milk that can be used in hemp smoothies or just enjoyed straight-up out of the blender. It’s important to remember that the best tasting hemp milk is the result of soaking the seeds in the cold water for at least 5 minutes before blending. Also, you can adjust the amount of hemp seed you use depending on how creamy you prefer your milk.
Now, blend the water and hemp seeds on high for about 3 minutes or until it’s totally milky and no visible seeds remain. And that’s it! Delicious hemp milk! Fresh hemp milk keeps for about a day or so. Remember this so that you make small batches to start with; and drink the milk as quickly as possible after making it. You won’t miss the boxed stuff after making this at home!
