Ital is Vital for Food Allergies! Jerk Seasoned Carrots with Hemp Seeds Recipe

If you are familiar with the Rastafarian religion you probably already know about ital and livity. Ital is the name of the dietary regulations observed by those who identify with the Rastafarian faith, which promises to enhance “livity” or the life force within each of us. Even if you aren’t Rastafarian, you too can observe the ital diet to increase your own livity!

When I was diagnosed with severe food allergies in 2012, my life changed forever because so much of the traditional western diet became instantly off limits to me (I am allergic to yeast and eggs). Cuisine which embraced fresh foods that were not preserved or fermented based on cultural or religious regulations became a mainstay in my life. Embracing many of the principals of ital cooking allowed me to feel less restricted and more satisfied, in addition to helping me lose weight and feel better.

So let’s talk a little bit about what ital cooking is. Ital are fresh and minimally processed foods which rarely contain meat (certainly no red meat, pork or shellfish). Ital cuisine is typically vegetarian or vegan, eschews alcohol or fermentation, uses little sugar, and only sea salt in small quantities if at all. However, ital cuisine is bursting with seasonings, spice and flavor–it’s high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and plant protein. Today’s recipe for Jerk Carrots and Hemp Seeds is ital, easy to prepare, and very satisfying.

This recipe is best prepared in a rice cooker and will make its own sauce during the cooking process.


2 lbs of peeled and cut fresh carrots

1 cup chicken or vegetable broth (free of yeast extracts or ferments)

2 tsp Jerk seasoning

1 tsp fresh chopped ginger

1 tsp fresh chopped garlic

Garlic salt or sea salt to taste

Scotch bonnet pepper sauce or chopped peppers to taste

1 tbsp of shelled hemp seeds

Juice from one lemon

Pinch of cracked black pepper

1/4 tsp curry powder


Put everything into your rice cooker except for the hemp seeds. Cook on one cycle until the carrots are done and the liquid has turned into a thicker sauce that clings to the carrots.

Spoon the carrots into a dish and sprinkle hemp seeds on top. That’s it! Enjoy! It’s about 50 calories per cup or serving.
